Who we are
Who We Are
.
We are travelers ourselves, so our hotel and our activities were designed to help you have the perfect vacation to this amazing area of Machu Picchu and Peru. Simply put, this is one of the best areas to bike, ride, or horseback ride in the whole world – as well as just relax and people watch in this ancient Incan village.
We have built a boutique hotel in the center of Ollantaytambo – while leaving the street front construction exactly as we found it years ago. Thus our hotel looks the same on the outside as it always has, which is as it should be. Inside however, a new courtyard with a flower garden exploding with bright colors forms the centerpiece of our hotel. Our rooms built around it all have views of either the garden, or also of the Incan ruins and the surrounding mountains. Large windows, imported bedding, and modern bathrooms with guaranteed hot showers complete the package.
We are defined for our experience, and our passion, of living in Ollantaytambo near Machu Picchu. With over ten years of getting to know the local people, culture, and mountains – combined with our complete understanding of what travelers want as expats ourselves – we can help your visit to Peru and Machu Picchu truly be a once in a lifetime trip.

Where KB Tambo Hotel and Tours really stands out is in the personal attention you will experience while staying here. As a small hotel, we offer a relaxed and familiar vibe that says you are with friends. Our other advantage is the unmatched passion we have for the local people, culture, and the mountains of Ollantaytambo. We love this area and aim to show you it from a local’s perspective – seeing things off the beaten path is our specialty, and there are a lot of them here to see! We do all kinds of trekking trips, mountain bike tours, and more.
Besides being travelers, we are also Trekkers, Explorers, and Mountain Bike Racers. We have served as guides and expedition leaders for several magazines, newspapers, and professional filming sessions. But you don’t have to do anything crazy to do a trip with us, most of our tours are just regular half day mountain biking, horseback riding and trekking and hiking trips in the Sacred Valley. Above all, we are just really passionate for both the local people and the mountains of Peru.
Will “KB” Janecek left the trails of Minnesota, USA for those of Peru and has spent many years exploring the trails around Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu & Vilcabamba. After traveling to most of the world’s great mountain ranges, we settled into Ollantaytambo, Peru and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We have organized adventure tours in Peru for a long time. Our favorite places to visit include Choquequirao, Vilcabamba, Huancancalle, Inti Punku and Quillabamba.
When not working in the hotel, we spend nearly all of our free time visiting the same places that we take you, our clients. We love to spend our free time trekking, hiking and mountain biking in Peru near Machu Picchu, Cusco, and Ollantaytambo. This place is the greatest !
That more than anything explains what kind of company we are. Our love for the area is authentic and is inspired by the accomplishments of the ancient Incas as well as their direct descendants of today – the local people who live in these sacred mountains (Apus, in Quechua) of the Incas. Few places in the world can boast of such a direct tie to the past – the inhabitants of the mountains where we hike, trek, and mountain bike can almost all trace their roots back hundreds of years.

Our team of Peruvian hotel staff and adventure guides are local inhabitants of Ollantaytambo and direct descendants of the Incas. They are knowledgeable about Incan history, culture, and language – because they still live it everyday. We think that it is this blend of new and old that make Ollantaytambo, and KB Tambo Hotel and Tours, your best choice to plan your once-in-a-lifetime vacation to Peru. Meet our Staff:
Will “KB” Janecek escaped an office cubicle in Minnesota, USA and after exploring first most of the world’s mountains he decided to settle in Ollantaytambo, Peru where he founded the hotel and adventure tour company. His passion is big mountains and Incan history and archaeology. Fortunately, there is plenty of all of that in the Sacred Valley, Cusco, and Ollantaytambo. KB learned a lot of humility trying to learn Spanish and the local culture and way of life. He says he is embarrassed about his Spanish but proud of the Quechua (Incan language) that he has learned. KB has wandered around trekking and gotten lost in just about every mountain valley within fifty kilometers of Machu Picchu and is extremely knowledgeable about the area, it’s history, and it’s inhabitants. He has spotted several pumas, a bespectacled bear near Choquequirao, and a few more snakes than he would like. He also is an avid downhill bike racer and has been on the podium several times for the world famous Inca Avalanche bike race in Ollantaytambo, Peru.

Chet “El Chet” Jarvis is the Lead Adventure Guide at KB Tambo Hotel and Tours. Chet wandered into town one day several years ago as a world traveling 19 year old from Vermont with $8 in his pocket, looking to pound nails for a little traveling money. He quickly fell in love with Ollantaytambo and the mountains, and we with him. He has now spent the last 5 years guiding and brings a ton of experience and knowledge to his trips along with an innate understanding of what our clients want. He has an infectious enthusiasm and it is difficult not to enjoy hanging out with Chet on the trails or a bike. Don’t let his laid back nature fool you, though, as he also has several first ascents, explorations, and all around epic treks to his credit. Rumor has it that Chet likes to drink beer after a long days walk and can be bribed with beef jerky.

Jose Manuel came into our front door the very first night we opened, as a precocious 9 year old who was helping to support his family by waiting at the train station for arriving travelers and helping them find lodging for a few soles in tips for the previous owner of our hostal. We were instantly taken by his pluck, intelligence, hard work, and determination to make a better life for his mother and brothers and sisters. Jose Manuel is like family to us and has been working with us ever since that first day over ten years ago. He now is in charge of Operations for our Tour Agency and he also is a guide and mechanic. Fluent in Quechua and Spanish, he also understands travelers from other countries and what they are looking for. Thus, to us he is the perfect guide for bridging two very different cultures. Jose Manuel is also a prolific downhill mountain biker, and his favorite trips are when pro riders come to Peru to shoot photos and film.
